Director General's Message to CERN Personnel for the New Year

Chers collègues,

En cette semaine de rentrée, je tiens à vous souhaiter une excellente année.

2004 est une année particulière pour le CERN, puisque c'est celle de son jubilé. Il y a 50 ans, des scientifiques visionnaires fondèrent ce Laboratoire. Ils unirent les efforts de pays européens qui venaient de se déchirer pour créer la première institution scientifique européenne. Depuis lors, le CERN, en plus de ses succès scientifiques et techniques, n’a cessé d’être le promoteur de relations privilégiées entre nations, en avance sur la diplomatie politique. C'est une grande fierté pour moi d'honorer la mémoire de ces visionnaires et de prendre mes fonctions en cette année d'anniversaire. C'est également un grand honneur de diriger une institution aussi prestigieuse. Je suis persuadé qu'avec votre collaboration, nous parviendrons à relever les défis et à assurer la réussite du projet LHC.

Je vous expliquerai plus en détail nos engagements pour l’année 2004 lors de la réunion à laquelle vous êtes tous conviés, le mardi 13 janvier.

I would like to welcome you back from the Christmas break and offer you my best wishes for the coming year.

2004 is a special year for CERN as it marks the Organization's golden jubilee.  Fifty years ago, the Laboratory was founded by visionary scientists.  By pooling the efforts of European countries that had just emerged from a divisive war, they created the first European scientific institution. Since then, in addition to achieving scientific and technological breakthroughs, CERN has always been one step ahead of political diplomacy in promoting special relationships between nations. I am very proud to honour the memory of these visionaries and to take up office in this anniversary year. It is a great honour for me to lead such a prestigious institution. I am confident that, with your collaboration, we will succeed in meeting the challenges ahead of us and in ensuring the success of the LHC project.

I invite you all to a meeting on Tuesday 13 January at which I will explain our commitments for 2004 in more detail.

L'exposé sera retransmis en circuit fermé de télévision dans la Salle du Conseil et dans les Amphithéâtres des Divisions AB (Meyrin), AB (Prévessin), IT (bât. 31) et AT (bât. 30). Une traduction simultanée en anglais sera disponible dans l'Amphithéâtre principal.

Closed-circuit transmission of the meeting will be available in the Council Chamber, the AB Division Auditoria in Meyrin and Prévessin, the IT Auditorium (Building 31) and the AT Auditorium (Building 30).  There will also be simultaneous interpreting into English in the Main Auditorium.
