Director General's Message to CERN Personnel for the New Year

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to welcome you back to CERN after a well-earned end of year break, and present my best wishes to you and your families for 2006.

In the 12 months ahead, we will all be striving to ensure that 2006 is the last year of the pre-LHC era. We can begin the year with confidence in this respect: 2005 ended on a high note, with a successful test of a complete sector of the LHC’s cryogenic distribution line, and magnets being installed at a significant rate. Council and the various committees overseeing the project were united in congratulating CERN, and all its personnel, on turning a difficult situation around in 2005. I would like to add my own personal thanks and congratulations to you for this impressive achievement.

However, there is much work still to be done: the installation and interconnect rates need to increase to 25 magnets per week to maintain the LHC start-up schedule for 2007. A review of the schedule is therefore planned for Spring 2006.

I would like to start the year with a discussion of this and other issues, and I invite you all to a meeting on 12 January at 4:00 pm at which I will review CERN’s activities in 2005 and present the perspectives for the year ahead.

J’aimerais vous souhaiter une bonne reprise au CERN après ces congés de fin d'année bien mérités et vous adresser, à vous comme à vos familles, mes meilleurs vœux pour 2006.

Ces douze prochains mois, nous travaillerons tous et toutes sans relâche pour faire en sorte que 2006 puisse marquer le terme de l’ère pré-LHC. A cet égard, nous pouvons nous engager avec optimisme dans la nouvelle année, car 2005 s’est terminée en beauté : un secteur complet de la ligne de distribution cryogénique du LHC a été testé avec succès et l’installation des aimants va bon train. Le Conseil et les divers comités chargés du suivi du projet ont unanimement félicité le CERN et tous les membres de son personnel pour avoir si bien redressé une situation difficile en 2005. Je tiens moi aussi à vous exprimer ma gratitude et à vous présenter mes félicitations pour ce véritable tour de force.

Il reste cependant beaucoup de pain sur la planche ! Si nous voulons réaliser l’objectif d’un démarrage du LHC en 2007, il faudra accélérer la cadence pour porter à 25 le nombre des aimants installés et interconnectés chaque semaine. Une révision du calendrier est donc prévue pour le printemps 2006.

C’est un sujet, parmi d’autres, que j’aimerais évoquer avec vous en ce début d’année. Aussi, je vous invite tous et toutes à une réunion le 12 janvier à 16 heures. J’y ferai le point des activités du CERN en 2005 et vous y présenterai les perspectives pour l’année à venir.
