The cool down of the 3km long LHC sector 7-8 between point 7 (Ferney-Voltaire) and point 8 (Prévessin) has entered a new phase. From 15 March, the entire sector is cooled at 4.5K (-268°C), with all the superconductive magnets' cryostats filled with liquid helium.
The cryostats had been kept at around 20 K (‑253°C) at the end of February before being gradually cooled down to 4.5 K (‑268°C) and filled with liquid helium. This new phase in the cooling process was successfully started on Monday 5 March.
To get down to 1.9K (‑271°C), a new component of the cryogenics plant, the 1.8K units, will be turned on.
In the meantime the teams who will carry out the magnet powering are busy validating the test procedures and running the interlock tests to ensure safe operation of the equipment. They are ready to start the powering as soon as the cryo team reaches stable conditions at 1.9 K.Follow the cool down on the Hardware Commissioning Coordination website.

Le refroidissement du secteur 7-8 du LHC, long de 3 kilomètres entre les points 7 (Ferney-Voltaire) et 8 (Prévessin), est entré dans une nouvelle phase. Depuis le 15 mars, le secteur complet est à 4,5 K (‑268°C), avec tous les cryostats des aimants supraconducteurs remplis d'hélium liquide.
Les cryostats avaient été maintenus à environ 20 K (‑253°C) fin février avant d'êtregraduellement refroidis à 4.5 K (‑268°C) et remplis d’hélium liquide. Cette nouvelle phase dans le refroidissement a démarré lundi 5 mars.
Pour la descente à 1,9 K (‑271°C), un nouveau système de la centrale cryogénique, les unités à 1,8 K, vont être mises en route.
Parallèlement, les équipes chargées de la mise sous tension des aimants valident les procédures de tests et réalisent des essais de verrouillage qui assurent un fonctionnement des équipements en toute sécurité. Elles sont prêtes à mettre les aimants sous tension dès que l’équipe de cryogénie aura stabilisé le secteur à 1,9K.
